SAN ANTONIO – On Saturday night at Austin Highway Events Center, local product Jairo Castaneda opened up an eight-fight card promoted by Team Morones Boxing and Triple A. Promotions.
It was Castaneda’s ninth pro fight and he entered and left the ring with a spotless record, earning his ninth victory by way of a four-round unanimous decision over Kenny Williams (3-4-1) of Palm Springs.
Castaneda established the jab early, peppering left and rights in with hopes of opening up Williams’ guard for bigger shots, which he did so successfully late in the first round to wobble Williams.
Williams answered back in round two, trading big blows with Castaneda, including one left hook that momentarily bothered him, but Castaneda seemed quicker to the punch and got off the cleaner shots.
Round three was more of the same for Castaneda as he continued to work the jab and landed sharp counter punches to keep Williams at bay. In a last ditch effort, Williams came out aggressive in round four in hopes of landing a power shot to flip the script on the fight.
The fight-changing punch never came, but Williams won his first round on my scorecard. I had it 39-37 on the FightScribe scorecard. Two officials had it 40-36, with one at 39-37.
Castaneda looks poised for a step up in competition soon. This is his second fight in four months after a year-long layoff in 2015, so his team has done well to get him back in the ring.
